Here the P-450 system performs what is known as 'phase one' of the detoxification process.

Alpha-lipoic acid, (ALA) sometimes referred to as thioctic acid, is a substance produced in decreasing amounts in the human body as we age. ALA is considered to be the most versatile member of the 'network antioxidant' family; five antioxidants that have a symbiotic and synergistic effect on each other. (The other network antioxidants are vitamins C and E, glutathione and co-enzyme Q-10.)
Free radical oxidative damage, and its suppression with the use of antioxidant supplements have become everyday topics of discussion in health columns of the mainstream press. While most articles promote the benefits of taking a product containing vitamin A (as beta-carotene), plus vitamins C and E, few will recognize that, in general, this strategy is flawed through being overly simplistic.
