Chlorella's ability to adsorb and expel heavy-metals and other toxic chemicals from the gastro-intestinal tract is a very well-documented phenomenon. It also contains components that will directly support the cytochrome P-450 detoxification enzyme system; the liver's primary tool for breaking down toxins of both external origin and internal catabolic waste products for removal. Here the P-450 system performs what is known as 'phase one' of the detoxification process.
While the liver can accomplish this task with ease when it is supplied with all of the nutrients that it needs to power this pathway, there is another system, known as the 'conjugation' or 'phase two' reactions of the detoxification process.
During phase two, toxins that have been broken down are 'conjugated', or 'chemically- joined' with additional elements that make them either water-soluble, for excretion through the kidneys and urine, or fat-soluble for release through the bile and into the colon.
